Advancing the development and deployment of next-generation geothermal technologies to scale up clean power production in the United States.

Expanded sources of clean, consistent power — electricity that can be available 24/7, regardless of weather or time of day — are critical for decarbonizing the grid in the U.S. and beyond.

Next-generation technologies for harnessing and deploying geothermal energy can help meet this need. These innovative technologies build off the century-old history of conventional geothermal, leveraging recent advances in drilling techniques that significantly increase the scale and potential of geothermal power production. While advanced demonstration projects are currently underway, challenges remain in terms of industry commercialization.

WRI engages with government, industry and nonprofit stakeholders to identify key barriers, policy options and opportunities for responsibly expanding the development and deployment of next-generation geothermal power. Drawing upon our expertise on the power system and advanced energy technologies, we will publish research and insights detailing the findings of these engagement efforts. , we will help lay a blueprint for the deployment of next-generation geothermal energy at the scale and speed necessary to mitigate climate change and provide reliable, affordable power to all.
