Bottom-up Climate Finance Requirements Tracker: Data and Methodology
This technical note explains the data and methodology used to develop the Climate Finance Requirements Tracker, which monitors countries’ finance requirements as expressed in their nationally determined contributions. The Climate Finance Requirements Tracker is available on Climate Watch.
This technical note outlines the data sources and methodology underpinning the Climate Finance Requirements Tracker, a tool designed to monitor countries’ climate finance needs as articulated in their nationally determined contributions (NDCs).
Since 2021, World Resources Institute (WRI) has systematically tracked the quantitative climate finance data reported in all rounds of NDCs. This includes financing requirements for both mitigation and adaptation, distinguishing between funding expected from international sources and that anticipated to be met through domestic finance. In addition, WRI has compiled data on the current and projected economic impacts of climate-related loss and damage, drawing from all available NDC submissions.
The Climate Finance Requirements Tracker provides a consolidated, quantitative view of these finance needs to support countries, policymakers and finance practitioners in strengthening climate planning, mobilizing resources and improving climate finance strategies.
