STATEMENT: Leading Automakers and California Strike Deal to Make More Fuel-Efficient Cars in U.S.
WASHINGTON (July 25, 2019) — Today it was announced that Ford, Honda, Volkswagen and BMW of North America struck a deal with California to produce more fuel-efficient cars for their U.S. fleets in coming years, coming very close to achieving the transportation pollution reductions from previous administrations.
Following is a statement from Dan Lashof, Director, WRI United States:
“This is an important breakthrough that will ensure the United States continues to make progress in addressing what is now our largest source of global warming pollution. It demonstrates beyond any doubt the recklessness of the Trump administration’s efforts to push the nation backwards on climate, regardless of how it harms families or businesses.
“The leadership shown today by California, Ford, Honda, Volkswagen and BMW of North America is commendable. The standards agreed to will save consumers money at the pump, cut air pollution and enable American automakers to better compete in a global market that is gravitating towards less polluting, more efficient vehicles. We hope that the rest of the automobile companies will follow their lead and help America benefit from cleaner air, a safer climate and a competitive 21st century economy.”
