Tools, Reporting and Analysis for Climate (TRAC) (Inactive)
TRAC provided standards, tools, data and analysis to help countries, cities and companies lay the foundation for large-scale emissions reductions.
TRAC sought to help reduce global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by developing standards, tools, data platforms and analysis that provide the foundation for effective, large-scale climate action. The aim was for key countries, companies and cities around the world to set ambitious, measurable targets to reduce their emissions — creating a tipping point for global action.
The initiative’s strategy for success incorporated four key elements: standards and tools, reporting and data platforms, data analysis, and campaigns. Through the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and MAPT programs, TRAC developed the world's top GHG accounting standards and tools for companies, cities and countries. It also helped governments build capacity to track progress toward meeting domestic climate and energy goals. The GHG Protocol for Cities serves as the global framework for accounting and reporting on city- and community-scale GHG emissions.
This initiative also established WRI’s climate data explorer, formerly known as the Climate Access Indicators Tool (CAIT) and now known as Climate Watch. The platform continues to provide critical data that shows emissions trends across countries, cities and business sectors.
TRAC also analyzed publicly reported emissions data to identify trends, issues and opportunities and made recommendations that influenced program and policy design. The Open Climate Network partnered with leading research organizations around the world to monitor and report on key countries’ progress toward addressing climate change. Finally, TRAC led and supported initiatives using reported data and analysis to encourage key decision makers to reduce emissions, and deploy effective communications strategies and partnerships to reach target audiences.
