Companies trying to implement GHG Protocol land sector guidance navigate many choices, including which data sources and methodologies to use to attribute emissions among different commodities within a landscape, region or country. There is a lack of detailed, transparent, rigorous best practices for implementation. There is also a lack of comprehensive, standardized metrics to ensure results can be compared. These challenges pose a significant barrier to ensuring the reliability and quality of the data that companies base their reporting on.

The Land Emissions Alliance (LEA), convened by WRI in partnership with industry experts, supports the operationalization of key parts of the GHG Protocol’s Land Sector and Removals Standard (LSRS). LEA partners collaborate to develop open-source data and tools that accelerate industry alignment and effective climate action by companies.

LEA partners enable credible, open-source implementation in line with the GHG Protocol's Land Sector and Removals Standard. LEA’s goals are to:

  • Combine the latest geospatial methods with agri-food sector expertise: LEA develops methods, data and emission factors for land sector and land-use change emissions consistent with LSRS. Input is gathered through real-world pilot tests to ensure the resulting products are fit for purpose.
  • Enable better corporate GHG accounting and reporting: LEA makes its methods and data open-source and publicly available for companies to implement in their own systems or infrastructure.
  • Scale the adoption of aligned methods, data and best practices across the land sector: The resulting outputs support standardized GHG emissions accounting and more comparable results, while facilitating corporate compliance with the GHG Protocol.
