ADVISORY: WRI, Climate Focus Press Call on Forests’ Benefits for Climate Stability, Progress Towards 2030 Goals
WASHINGTON (October 13, 2022) — On October 19th at 9:30 am EDT/2:30 pm BST, World Resources Institute (WRI) and Climate Focus will host an embargoed press call to preview the findings of a new research paper, “Not Just Carbon: Capturing all the benefits of forests for stabilizing the climate from local to global scales,” as well as the “Forest Declaration Assessment,” which assesses progress toward ending deforestation and restoring forests in line with the commitments under the Glasgow Leaders’ Declaration.
“Not Just Carbon” will demonstrate the risks of ignoring forests’ significant – and overwhelmingly positive – effects beyond carbon removal and storage on local, regional, and global climate stability. The forthcoming research details the major implications for agriculture, water, and public health policies at local, regional, and national scales, as well as for global climate policy, especially the accurate accounting of the global warming effects of tropical forest loss.
“The Forest Declaration Assessment” (formerly the New York Declaration on Forests Progress Assessment) assesses global progress towards the goals of halting deforestation and restoring degraded land by 2030, the focus of several climate pledges and a critically important goal needed to limit climate change to the 1.5°C target of the Paris Agreement. The civil-society led assessment examines the status of forest protection efforts by countries and companies; finance for forests; and the enforcement of forest laws and governance of forests.

WHAT
In advance of COP27, WRI experts will preview the new research paper “Not Just Carbon" and highlight actions needed to recognize all the benefits of forests for stabilizing the climate and their role in mitigating global surface temperature increase.
Experts from Climate Focus will preview “The Forest Declaration Assessment” and discuss how the world can achieve the goal of ending deforestation by 2030.
Following brief presentations, we will provide ample time for questions from the media.
The findings in “Not Just Carbon’’ and “The Forest Declaration Assessment” are strictly embargoed for Monday, October 24 at 12:01 am EDT/6:01 am CET. To preview the full embargoed reports or receive press materials, please email Alison Cinnamond.
