WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities celebrates its 10th anniversary at a pivotal moment. Over the last decade, cities have begun monumental shifts in energy systems, mobility, climate planning and much more. And the “urban century” is only just beginning. Over the next 30 years, 2.5 billion people will be added to cities, most in Africa and Asia, where the need for new jobs and better quality of life balances precariously with the imperative to strengthen resilience to climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. WRI Ross Center experts have helped shape these transformations in hundreds of cities and dozens of countries so far. In this report, you will find highlights of both the last 10 years of impact as well as our most recent year’s efforts, which have directly affected or influenced more than 388 cities, from the latest WRI Ross Center Prize for Cities finalists, to centering equity in U.S. climate projects, nature-based solutions in Brazil, and collaborative air quality forecasts in Kenya.
