STATEMENT: Curbelo Proposal Renews Hope for Bipartisan Climate Action
WASHINGTON (July 23, 2018) — Today Republican Congressman Carlos Curbelo introduced the Market Choice Act, co-sponsored by Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA). The legislation would charge for carbon emissions from fuel combustion and large industrial sources. For more information, see WRI's blog post on the proposal.
Below is a statement from Dr. Andrew Steer, President & CEO, World Resources Institute:
“For the first time in a decade a Republican congressman has put forward a bill to seriously address climate change, bringing renewed hope for bi-partisan engagement on this issue. This bill reflects the growing understanding that we can address dangerous emissions and at the same time generate revenue that can be used to strengthen the nation. Addressing climate change is urgent for the prosperity and well-being of our communities, economy, and national security. Climate impacts are mounting and they do not distinguish among political parties.
“WRI looks forward to working with Representative Curbelo and other members of Congress to explore pathways to reduce U.S. emissions and seize economic opportunities of a low-carbon future. It will take leadership at all levels of government – from local communities to the halls of Congress – to respond to this challenge of our generation.”
