Bike Battles: Lessons from the Past to Plan for our Mobility Future
Join the conversation: @NUMOalliance
Join WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities and NUMO for a presentation by Dr. James Longhurst, author of Bike Battles: A History of Sharing the American Road and professor of history at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Longhurst will trace the contentious debates between American cyclists, motorists and pedestrians over the shared road, as well as what the evolution of our transportation system and the ways we are planning for our future mobility mean for the bicycle.
Joining Dr. Longhurst will be Peter Harnik, co-founder of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. Mr. Harnik will give a sneak preview of his upcoming book on the history of the rails-to-trails movement, starting with its grassroots beginnings on Wisconsin’s Elroy-Sparta Trail to mobilizing congressional action to give new life to Washington, D.C.’s Capital Crescent Trail and New York’s High Line.
