Each gift to WRI—from our smallest-dollar donors to our largest—propels the organization forward in its mission to transform the global economy for people, nature and climate.

We continue to take pride in the diversity of our donors. In 2024, our community of supporters included multilateral institutions, national governments, corporations, private and family foundations, and individuals. We are deeply value this diverse group of donors who share our vision for a sustainable, prosperous future and joined us this year in the work to make it happen.

We are tremendously grateful to our donors that provide multiyear enterprise or institutional funding which is the critical “working capital” that strengthens the engine of WRI, powering and enhancing our capacity – and that of our partners on the ground – to innovate, be agile and deliver concrete results. This category is helmed by the core support of Royal Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. We want to especially note the flexible gifts we received this year from Bank of America, Google.org, Patrick J. McGovern Foundation and Prirosha Godrej Foundation.

Individuals are a critical and growing segment of our donor community for whom we are extremely appreciative. Among this group, members of our Global Board of Directors, Global Leadership Council, Sustainer’s Circle, and many other individuals provide transformative unrestricted support that allows WRI to build strength where it is needed most.

We welcome philanthropists, foundations, corporations, and others to join in funding WRI. Each gift to WRI moves us forward, building our community of passionate contributors and allowing us to deliver more and greater impact. Your partnership positions us to lead the way in building a better future on a healthier planet.

Thank you.

IKEA Foundation

Since 2017, IKEA Foundation and WRI have partnered to jointly advance solutions for people, nature and climate. This includes the development and launch of Energy Access Explorer, a geospatial data platform to better integrate clean energy into decision-making, and efforts to promote more sustainable food systems. In 2024, IKEA Foundation grants provided funding to advance work on four critical projects:

  • Engaging partners in India and Sub-Saharan Africa in the healthcare and livelihood sectors to integrate clean energy into strategies for improving development outcomes.
  • Partnering to transform the Rwandan food system by providing technical assistance to scale circular business models, create an enabling environment for food system transformation, and supporting market linkages.
  • Increasing climate ambition by working with countries to revise their nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and developing analysis to inform global climate negotiations through the UNFCCC.
  • Driving adoption of more sustainable and regenerative agricultural practices in India and Ethiopia to create more prosperous rural livelihoods, improve nutrition and build climate resilience.

Our collaboration with the IKEA Foundation is natural in that we jointly look to effect systemic change. Together we partner to combat the main drivers of inequity, ecosystem degradation and climate change, by changing the way the world produces food, uses energy and designs its cities. On a global and local scale, we’re effecting meaningful, lasting change.

WRI cooperation with GIZ

For decades, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has been at the forefront of international cooperation, providing expertise and innovative solutions to tackle global development challenges. As a federally owned enterprise, GIZ plays a key role in implementing Germany’s (and EU) international cooperation priorities, from climate action, green skills and sustainable urban development to renewable energy and biodiversity conservation.

WRI and GIZ share a long-standing history of collaboration in key areas such as sustainable mobility, land restoration, and national climate action. This cooperation has built mutual trust and demonstrated the power of aligning expertise and resources. Today both institutions share a strong commitment to driving systemic transformations that address global challenges at scale.

Destination GIZ 2028 and WRI’s Strategic Plan 2023-2027 both recognize that system-wide change can only be realized through strong partnerships that bridge research, policy and implementation. This shared understanding has led to a new chapter of WRI-GIZ cooperation: the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) providing a framework for a more structured and strategic way of cooperation, leveraging institutional strengths and comparative advantages to maximize impact across global sustainability agendas.

Throughout 2024, the first year of this partnership within the MoU framework, dedicated workstreams from both organizations have collaborated on Just Transition, Green Skills, Mobility, Cities and Data—producing joint activities that have strengthened institutional ties and demonstrated the power of collective action. By combining WRI’s research and convening capacity with GIZ’s on-the-ground expertise and implementation strengths, this partnership has helped expand networks, amplify visibility and foster knowledge exchange at a global scale.

At a time when the world faces unprecedented challenges—climate change, biodiversity loss, growing urbanization and an unprecedented pace of digitalization—strong partnerships are more crucial than ever. The WRI-GIZ MoU provides a valuable framework to structure and strategically align efforts, ensuring that together we can drive meaningful change for people, nature and climate. WRI deeply values this collaboration and looks forward to furthering our shared mission in the years to come.

Tom Nowak at the San Juan National Monument

“After a career as an ER-trauma doctor and raising two children, retirement gave me time and resources to focus on my passion, the natural world. Living a simple life on the Salish Sea, I sought to protect pristine places and threatened species by acquiring and managing my preserves.

Recognizing the growing challenges facing our natural world, I wanted to amplify my personal efforts and turned to philanthropy—carefully evaluating organizations for their efficiency and impact. That journey led me to WRI, where I’m proud to support meaningful, lasting change.”

Anne & Stuart Safft

Anne and Stuart Safft

“We researched multiple charities and became impressed by WRI given its reputation; its focus on people, nature and climate; and its global research, data, communications and initiatives. Our long-standing concern for what we humans are doing to our planet, along with the changing geopolitical landscape, made the environment and, within that, WRI, a natural and easy choice!”

Rippleworks

Co-founded in 2015 by Doug Galen and Chris Larsen, Rippleworks is a foundation rooted in entrepreneurship and built around the needs of scaling social impact organizations. These organizations, including WRI, are tackling some of the world’s biggest challenges, including agriculture, education, healthcare inequity, human rights and climate change. It helps organizations scale their impact with flexible funding models, tailored advisory programs and leadership training. The core belief behind the existence of Rippleworks is that it believes everyone deserves equal access to the resources and opportunities needed to live their best lives. Since 2023, Rippleworks has supported WRI’s Restore Local initiative by deploying a $20 million unrestricted grant through the TED Audacious Project, as well as leadership training and two custom-designed advisory projects. These projects focused on developing an organizational design and decision-making structure to help WRI scale their Restore Local initiative across Africa, as well as build a performance management system for its growing global team.

Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, through scientific discovery and environmental conservation, is dedicated to advancing significant, positive outcomes for our planet and future generations.

In over twenty years of partnership, WRI and the Moore Foundation have worked across sectors and economies—from agriculture to forest conservation and beyond—to achieve transformative environmental action. The Moore Foundation has been an early and invaluable supporter of Global Forest Watch (GFW), which provides the latest data, technology and tools to businesses looking to mitigate natural resource risks in their supply chains and better protect forests. Through our collaboration, we also continue to make large strides in transforming food systems by supporting the enhancement of food policies to advance sustainable soy and beef trade, incentivize key countries to eliminate the illegal conversion of natural ecosystems and support improvements in food and land use programs for family farmers in Brazil, among other efforts.

We are grateful for our many years of collaboration with the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and look forward to our continued efforts in support of a sustainable future.
