Shah Suraj Bharat
Asia and Europe Coordinator, FOLU

Shah Suraj Bharat is the Asia and Europe Coordinator for the Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU), where he coordinates FOLU’s programs in Indonesia, China, India and Europe.
Prior to joining FOLU, he held positions in Indonesia with the World Bank Disaster Risk Management Unit, Tenggara Strategics and The Jakarta Post; in New Zealand with Fairfax; and in the UK with the Economic and Social Research Council.
Shah also spent five years with FMR Research & Advisory in Myanmar, including two years as Country Manager where he led the company following the 2021 military coup d’état. During this time he directed two advisory projects on food systems: analysing food security and trade amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and advising on investment opportunities in post-harvest horticultural supply chains.
Shah graduated at the top of his class in MSc Political Economy of Emerging Markets at King’s College London and obtained an integrated BA from the National University of Singapore and Royal Holloway. He also served as Research Fellow at the ASEAN Studies Center, Gadjah Mada University.
Fun fact: Shah is a heavy metal enthusiast and is excited to experience London’s legendary music venues.
