Obadiah Kung'u Mungai
Environmental Finance Lead, WRI Africa
Obadiah Mungai is the Environmental Finance Lead, WRI Africa, where he helps mobilize finance for climate-resilient, nature-positive urban initiatives by working with partners to move high-potential Nature Based Solution (NbS) and Green-Grey Infrastructure (GGI) projects from concept to transaction. He also provides engagement, technical analysis, and advisory support to develop financing strategies, policy solutions, and institutional arrangements necessary to advance NbS & GGI projects on the ground. He collaborates with investors, donors, government agencies, NGOs, and communities across multiple African countries.
Previously, while serving as the Chief Environmental Economist at the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) Kenya, he spearheaded development and implementation of various economic instruments, policies, and strategies all aimed at sustainable environmental management and natural resource conservation. He also helped resource mobilize for various large projects supporting climate and environment in Kenya. In line with this, he has previously coordinated various large donor funded projects in Kenya focusing on climate and environment. His previous roles also include privately consulting with various clients on national and regional assignments as well as working with the Kenya’s National Treasury as an Economist.
Obadiah earned his Master of Arts (Economics) Degree from the University of Nairobi and a Master of Science Degree in Public Policy Analysis from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology. His other professional and academic credentials include being a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya, a Certified Securities and Investment Analyst, and an Environmental Impact Assessment Lead Expert. He is based in Nairobi, Kenya where he lives with his family.
