STATEMENT: WRI Reacts to Senate Confirmation of Scott Pruitt as EPA Administrator
WASHINGTON (February 17, 2017) — Scott Pruitt was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the new administrator to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Below is WRI's statement.
Statement by Andrew Steer, President & CEO, World Resources Institute:
“Regardless of political view, background or income level, Americans want the government to protect our air, water and climate. If Scott Pruitt rolls back these vital protections, the backlash will be fierce. Meanwhile, Americans’ health and economy would suffer.
“As one of the most controversial EPA administrators to enter office, Pruitt has far to go to prove he will work on behalf of all Americans, not just industry.
“EPA must be able to continue its crucial role in reducing the dangerous pollution that causes climate change. Congress and the Supreme Court have affirmed EPA’s obligation to protect Americans from climate change and its dangerous impacts. As EPA administrator, Pruitt needs to stop politicizing science and undermining the measures that protect Americans.
“Pruitt needs to stand up for the agency’s commitment to open and transparent scientific data, which is essential for sound policymaking and maintaining trust with all Americans. EPA scientists and staff need to be able to conduct their research, share information and advance solutions without fear of political meddling or reprisal.”
