Launch – New Economy for the Brazilian Amazon (NEA-BR)
Time zones: 1pm-4pm EDT / 2pm-5pm BRT
A new, more sustainable economic model for the Amazon is possible. Our research finds that Brazil can keep its economy growing and create more jobs without any new deforestation, by expanding forest restoration and the bioeconomy to sustainably produce goods, shifting to low-carbon agriculture, and deploying clean energy.
These findings are from the New Economy for the Brazilian Amazon, a groundbreaking new report by WRI Brasil and the The New Climate Economy in partnership with Brazilian research institutions, which uses a multisectoral analysis and various scenarios to forecast the Legal Amazon’s economy until 2050.
Join WRI Brasil and partners on June 20 at 1 p.m. EDT for a high-level discussion with the authors and other experts, leading policy leaders and government representatives on how to unlock the transition for a new economy in the Amazon region.
The transition will require multiple actions: eliminating deforestation in the Amazon, expanding the bioeconomy, shifting to low-carbon agriculture, and decarbonizing Brazil’s energy mix. But the benefits of implementing this new sustainable approach for the Brazilian Amazon vastly outweigh the costs. Brazil can convert the deforestation crisis to an immense opportunity for economy-wide innovation and a new social contract between all Brazilian society—with justice, equity, and stewardship at the heart.
