Transport Research Intern - Cities and Transport Program

This is a hybrid position which requires 8 days per month in the office. You will be based in our office in WRI Indonesia, Jakarta. Existing work authorization is required at the time of application submission as WRI is unable to sponsor any visa work sponsorship for this position.

Program Overview

WRI Indonesia’s e-mobility portfolio focuses on reducing cities’ greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through sustainable transportation and vehicle electrification, while working in parallel with energy and climate programs to green the electricity grid and maximize emission reductions. Our mission is to help cities and provinces implement low-carbon development, particularly in the transportation and energy sectors, to achieve economic, social, and environmental goals.

Zero-Emission Heavy-Duty Vehicle (HDV) Acceleration

Heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) contribute 31.7% of GHG emissions from national land transport and are also a major contributor to air pollution. From an energy security perspective, national diesel consumption continues to increase, reaching 38.57 million kiloliters (KL) in 2024. Indonesia’s high reliance on diesel also exposes the transport sector to volatility in global oil prices, creating broader implications for national energy security. To address these environmental and energy challenges, the Government of Indonesia (GoI), through the National Energy Master Plan, has set ambitious targets for zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) adoption, including the electrification of heavy-duty vehicles such as public transport buses and trucks.

To address these fundamental barriers, WRI Indonesia is proposing a supply- and demand-side approach to accelerate ZEV adoption in the HDV sector in Indonesia. The goal of this project is to develop a policy framework and proof of concept for the National Green Logistics Corridor Initiative to accelerate freight decarbonization, which can simultaneously address supply- and demand-side barriers to HDV electrification. Through this strategic program, which will be co-implemented with key national ministries and private-sector stakeholders, WRI Indonesia seeks to engage a Transport Research Intern to support research and analysis on sustainable transport and electric mobility strategies.

General Internship Roles

The Transport Research Intern will work closely with the Urban Mobility team to support research and implementation related to electric mobility strategies. The role will involve conducting desk research, carrying out interviews with key stakeholders, analyzing mobility data, and assisting in the preparation of reports, presentations, and other research materials.

Furthermore, the Intern will also support the development and implementation of the Indonesia Freight Decarbonization Accelerator (IFDA) by contributing to strategy-related activities, supporting stakeholder engagement activities, and assisting in the preparation of materials for project activities and engagement.

Based in Jakarta with office-flex working arrangement, the intern will report directly Electric Mobility Program Lead. In support of WRI's DEI commitment, the Intern will be responsible for actively participating in these collaborative efforts by integrating equity into their work, the workplace, and the organizational culture.

What You Will Learn

1. Gain exposure to various topics related to electric mobility and transportation decarbonization.

2. Develop research skills and apply research findings to strategic planning and research for electric mobility projects, including:

• Involvement in policy and regulatory analysis related to electric mobility and zero-emission vehicles.
• Involvement in research and data analysis on transportation decarbonization, electric vehicles, and other low-carbon mobility solutions.
• Involvement in event planning and execution, data collection and processing, and project development, as necessary.

3. Develop stakeholder engagement skills and apply them to support the development of electric mobility initiatives.

• Engage with key stakeholders in the field of sustainable transportation, with a focus on government agencies, to support the development and implementation of green mobility initiatives.
• Assist with meetings and other external communication tasks.

Internship Development Approach

Throughout the internship period, the intern will receive guidance, supervision, and regular feedback from assigned supervisors to support both learning objectives and professional development. The internship is intended to provide meaningful exposure to the topic while allowing the intern to contribute to ongoing program activities in a supportive learning environment.

The intern may also have opportunities to:

• participate in internal discussions, workshops, and knowledge-sharing sessions;
• observe stakeholder engagement and program coordination processes;
• receive mentoring and constructive feedback on assignments and outputs;
• strengthen understanding of professional practices within nonprofit and research-based organizations

What You Will Need

• Bachelor’s Degree in transportation, urban planning, civil engineering, economics, or any other related field. Final-year student are welcome to apply.
• Demonstrate interest in transportation, green mobility, environment, and low carbon technology issues.
• Basic experience in conducting research and data analysis using various tools.
• Highly motivated, strong can-do attitude, proactive work style and excellent organizational skills and work ethic.
• Ability and willingness to work from Jakarta, Indonesia.
• Ability and willingness to travel to other provinces/cities in Indonesia if assigned
• Proficiency in English and Bahasa Indonesia, both written and verbal
• Legally able to enroll on an internship program in Indonesia

Internship Terms

This is a paid internship program. Intern will actively participate on the program activities and entitled for a compensation on monthly basis.
