STATEMENT: WRI Statement on U.S. President Biden’s 2023 State of the Union Address
WASHINGTON (February 7, 2023) — U.S. President Joe Biden will deliver the State of the Union address to share the administration’s accomplishments and lay out priorities for the coming year. Biden is expected to highlight many of his recent legislative accomplishments, such as the Inflation Reduction Act with historic climate investments, including tax credits for clean energy, electric vehicles, energy efficiency and carbon removal and $60 billion for environmental justice.
Following is a statement from Dan Lashof, Director, WRI United States:
“The United States scored a touchdown for climate action with the Inflation Reduction Act. Now the government must turn words into action so Americans can fully realize the many climate, economic and equity benefits from the law.
“President Biden should use this opportunity to remind Congress that climate change does not differentiate between red and blue states and that the economic benefits of clean energy are distributed broadly across rural as well as urban areas. Lawmakers can continue advancing climate-smart legislation, including through the forthcoming Farm Bill, to ensure the U.S. meets its emission reduction targets and seizes the massive opportunities in a low-carbon economy.
“Lawmakers should also come together to provide support to vulnerable countries already facing devastating, climate change-fueled disasters. Fulfilling the United States’ international climate finance commitments can blunt climate impacts, promote food security and save lives while also showing vulnerable developing countries that America stands by its word.”
