International Loss and Damage Architecture a Year Out: Learning from the Experiences in the Most Vulnerable SIDS
Millions of people today are on the frontlines of the real-life consequences of higher temperatures, rising seas, fiercer storms and unpredictable rainfall — and collective efforts are currently not enough to tackle the speed and scale of these impacts. With more than 3 billion people globally living in highly vulnerable areas, loss and damage architecture is crucial to ensuring these countries and communities can get the support they urgently need.

WRI’s experts are closely following the UN climate talks. Watch our Resource Hub for new articles, research, webinars and more.
COP29 marks the first anniversary of the creation of the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage (FRLD) — a landmark moment at COP28, and the operationalization of the Santiago Network for Loss and Damage (SNLD), from which the first round of technical assistance has been requested by Vanuatu.
Vanuatu and partners welcome you to a traditional “tok storian” where we will invite participants to be an active part of the conversation, offer reflections on the value and justice of addressing loss and damage for communities on the ground, the urgency of these efforts, and how international structures can best meet communities’ needs. Join practitioners, negotiators, philanthropies, and more, to assess the progress learnings and experiences of the most climate-vulnerable communities affected to date. The event will close with a conversation to chart the future of the loss and damage architecture, as we look to inform how the FRLD and SNLD can effectively mobilize the scale of finance and other support needed for years to come.
This event is co-hosted by Vanuatu, Manila Observatory, National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of the United States (Baha'i International Community) , International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD), and Allied for Climate Transformation by 2025 (ACT2025)
No need to register, we welcome you to join us and participate in the discussion alongside our facilitator, Stephanie Stephens from Vanuatu’s Ministry of Climate Change.
