Urban Nature Based Solutions Associate

Charity Mumbi is the Urban Nature Based Solutions Associate, supporting the African Cities Climate Resilience (ACCR) Program in Kenya. In this role, she coordinates the Resilient and Equitable Cities program, Green-Gray Infrastructure Accelerator Initiative and other city engagement work in Kenya. Charity’s fundamental role is to coordinate the scoping of NBS opportunities for investment and implementation of Nature Based Solutions projects, lead stakeholders’ management and partners engagement on urban climate resilience, for prioritization of climate resilience action plans in cities and support mobilization of funds through development of large-scale grants and funding proposals to unlock additional resources for NBS projects and partners. To achieve these goals, Charity collaborates closely with urban communities and stakeholders to influence policies and drive actionable climate resilience initiatives.
Prior to joining WRI, Charity served as a research manager at Slum Dwellers International- Kenya (SDI-K), where she coordinated climate change and resilience action research, partnerships building and strengthening, proposals writing and fundraising, projects and teams management, data management, policy research for evidence informed decision making, and facilitated citizen led urban development process.
She also worked with Kounkuey Design Initiative (KDI) as a research assistant, where she designed data collection tools aimed at fragmenting the social, economic, infrastructural and psychological costs of climate disasters to human livelihoods and crafted contextual community resilience mechanisms as a response to the climate disasters. Additionally, she contributed to the Centre for Urban Research and Innovation as a Researcher, where she helped create transportation, environmental, and economic plans for settlements in Kitui County, Kenya.
Charity Mumbi holds a Bachelor’s degree in Urban and Regional planning, and a Master of Science degree in Sustainable Urban Development, both from the university of Nairobi. She is currently pursuing a second Master’s degree in Carbon Management at the University of Edinburgh.
Committed to inclusive and sustainable urban development, Charity advocates for planning "with, not for" urban populations to achieve equitable urban development, environmental restoration, and climate resilience. Her passion for grassroots engagement and empowering vulnerable communities inspired her to study basic counseling and psychology, enabling her to extend professional socio-psychological support to communities impacted by climate disasters.
