Leianne Wijnhoud
Research Analyst, Energy Minerals and Circularity

Leianne Wijnhoud is a Research Analyst at WRI's Energy Program, focusing on the Energy Minerals and Circularity pillar. Her work supports responsibly meeting the demand for energy minerals to support the energy transition, while protecting both people and nature.
Leianne’s professional experience spans international diplomacy, sustainable development, and youth engagement. She interned at VNG International and at the Dutch Embassy in Maputo, focusing on sustainable livelihoods, food security, and gender and youth. Leianne also served as Project Lead on meaningful youth participation in Dutch foreign policy, collaborating with the Dutch National Youth Council and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Academically, Leianne holds a BSc in Political Science with a specialization in International Relations from Leiden University, a minor in China Studies from Peking University, and a Research Master in International Development Studies from the University of Amsterdam. During her studies, she developed a strong interest in the political-economic, social, and environmental dimensions of mineral resource extraction. Her qualitative research has focused on both artisanal and industrial mining in Mozambique, where she worked at the intersection of local communities, governments, and mining companies and cooperatives.
Of Dutch and Mozambican heritage, Leianne grew up in both countries as well as in other parts of sub-Saharan Africa. She is currently based in the Netherlands. Outside of work, Leianne enjoys live music, cooking, and staying active through running, swimming, and yoga. She’s also an enthusiastic bowler!
