GENEVA (April 28, 2026) – The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol), the world’s leading framework for measuring and managing greenhouse gas emissions, today announced the appointment of Tim Mohin as its first Chief Executive Officer, marking a significant step in the organization’s evolution.

The appointment of this new executive role comes at a pivotal moment for emissions reporting. As carbon accounting becomes central to regulation, corporate strategy and capital allocation, GHG Protocol—together with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)—has been mandated by the COP30 Presidency to lead the global harmonization of greenhouse gas accounting under the COP Action Agenda through to the 2028 Global Stocktake. This places GHG Protocol at the center of one of the most consequential market-shaping efforts in climate policy and corporate reporting.

Tim Mohin will lead the organization through this next phase, working closely with governments, regulators, standard setters, businesses and civil society to strengthen carbon accounting practices, drive alignment across frameworks and build trust in emissions disclosures worldwide, as part of a maturing of the GHG Protocol’s leadership structure.

“I’ve spent my career at the intersection of corporate sustainability and public policy - across government, global business and standards setting,” said Tim Mohin. “The Greenhouse Gas Protocol underpins corporate climate commitments, regulatory disclosure frameworks, net‑zero targets and carbon markets worldwide. This is the most important climate infrastructure job in the world, and this is the moment it matters most.”

Tim brings decades of global leadership with a unique combination of standard-setting, executive leadership and environmental expertise across the public and private sectors. He will join GHG Protocol by June 1st. Tim has served as CEO of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) – a leading standard-setting organization – and has held senior sustainability leadership roles at major technology companies including Intel, Apple and AMD. He also worked in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Senate, bringing deep experience in policy, regulation and government engagement on sustainability issues. Most recently, Tim has been a Partner and Director of Climate and Sustainability at Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

“As the role of emissions data continues to expand, the organization is entering a new phase of maturity - strengthening its governance, institutional capacity and global engagement,” Mohin added. “This is a once-in-a-generation restructuring of how the world accounts for carbon. I am excited to help shape that.”

Over the past two years, GHG Protocol has strengthened its institutional foundations to meet growing expectations, including establishing a Steering Committee and Independent Standards Board in 2024. It has also deepened collaboration across the reporting ecosystem, and formalizing partnerships with the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) and ISO.

Ensuring GHG Protocol can scale its impact, support its ambitious standards publication timeline, and engage effectively across a complex and rapidly evolving global landscape will be an important part of the executive mandate.

“The scale of our work and the pace of change across the reporting landscape bring with them a growing need for a dedicated CEO role,” said Geraldine Matchett, Chair of the GHG Protocol Steering Committee. “This reflects a natural step in GHG Protocol’s institutional maturity and will enable the organization to meet rising expectations while sustaining the integrity and independence of its standards. Tim fits the bill perfectly and is the right leader for this moment.”

For more than 25 years, GHG Protocol has been led by World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). Built on scientific rigor, business relevance, and multi stakeholder governance, the GHG Protocol has become the globally trusted standard for emissions accounting. Today, 97% of disclosing S&P 500 companies report their GHG inventories using the GHGP.

“At a time when demand for consistent and credible data is accelerating, Tim brings the experience and executive leadership needed to guide the GHG Protocol through its next phase,” said Ani Dasgupta, President and CEO of World Resources Institute. “His appointment strengthens the Protocol’s global role and will help ensure its standards continue to drive alignment, enable comparability and support decision-making across markets and economies worldwide.”

“Tim brings deep experience, respected leadership, and a strong understanding of the needs of business and other stakeholders,” said Peter Bakker, President and CEO of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). “We look forward to working with him to ensure the GHG Protocol continues to serve as a robust, trusted set of standards.”

“The creation of a CEO role reflects the Greenhouse Gas Protocol’s continued evolution and growing role in the global carbon accounting ecosystem,” said Pankaj Bhatia, who has led the initiative for over 20 years. “Tim brings strong leadership, supported by a deeply experienced team, to guide the Protocol forward as it scales its impact globally. As I transition from my role and begin the next chapter of my career, I do so with great confidence in the future of the Protocol, with Tim and the team driving this next phase of growth.”
