Maria supports the activities of the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy, and the development and delivery of the Sustainable Ocean Initiative and its associated workstreams.

Over the past 10 years, Maria’s work has focused on understanding the effects of climate change in marine and coastal ecosystems. She has conducted research in the Mediterranean Sea, the Tropical Eastern Atlantic, the North Sea, the Skagerrak, the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea and the Sea of Japan.

Prior to joining WRI, she worked at GRID-Arendal in Norway, where she led the development of the UNEP global assessment report on seagrasses ‘Out of the Blue’ and established the International Seagrass Experts Network. She was responsible for training experts from seven West African countries in scientific monitoring and ecosystems services assessment of marine habitats.

Maria holds a BSc in Biology from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, a MSc in Freshwater and Coastal Sciences, from the University of London and a PhD in Marine Sciences and Policy from Edinburgh Napier University.

When the spring comes, you can always find her tending her crops in the allotment.
