Video: Protecting Coral Reefs

Reef ecosystems face both local and global threats. Here is what needs to be done to ensure the world’s corals and mangroves are preserved.

This video talks about the upcoming Reefs at Risk Revisited project, and how placing an economic value on coral reefs and mangroves can help make the case for conservation. (Read the extended Q&A here.)

When being in my homeland of St.Maarten/St.Martin; i wrote plans to reestablish coral reefs and mangrove forest for the P.M.I.A.. for the benefit of economical survival of island inhabitants. The establishment of new mangroves would help the fish population in the area but it would need to be a joint venture of the islands as group or collective as Caricom to fully be able to make a large impact.

In my Visit to Jamaica as a guest of the mayor of ST.Ann I was fortunate to meet with of the ministers in 2005 and found out about Jamaica's project crystaline waters and waters of life which had a similar objective to the plans for my island. This showed that joint ventures to me was possible. The cost effectiveness can of these ventures could be made through community educational programs in all the islands. Further research allowed me to find out about the program of one of the universities of the islands of St.Thomas which had established a new way to plant mangroves in moving tides for rapid establishment.

Now in Florida heading back to the Netherlands my interest has peaked on what can be done to establish a more universal body for mangrove protection and sustainable fisheries. The idea of bio remediation by fungi in joint with these ecosystem can be a further solution to what was previous establish in out layed plans. Experiments in bio remediation in Washington state has yielded good results and can be the solution to the toxic runoffs.
The information gained by the company of Paul Stamets on fungi bio remediation can be solution as the first defense before mangroves. On some local problems. Government tagging of fish to know their migration paths might be use full information as the reefs change.Especially for fishermen.

If the lady can contact me i would not mind giving her some N.G.O.'s that would be interested in the topics here in the Caribbean. Success in your endeavor as we try to save reefs at risk
