Water Access and The Bottom Line

Small and medium sized enterprises (SME’s) play a particularly important role in addressing environmental challenges that require financially and ecologically sustainable solutions.

One of the most daunting challenges is fresh water supply and access. More than one billion people lack access to clean drinking water, and 98 percent of them are in emerging economies. The future promises additional strain: in 25 years, two-thirds of the world’s population will be living in water-stressed countries.

Evolving and emerging markets can expect high demand for products and systems that conserve water as the number of urban residents grows to 4 billion by 2015. Here’s how two of the entrepreneurs mentored by WRI’s New Ventures project are meeting this demand in Mexico and Brazil.
