In May 2002 EMBARQ launched a partnership with Mexico City to develop a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor, implement a diesel retrofit pilot, and test optimal engine/fuel combinations for new buses under Mexico City operating conditions. The project is the first-ever public-private partnership to tackle the problems of urban transport in Mexico City from an integrated perspective. Four years into the effort, it has already yielded concrete results, including a functional 20 km BRT system that has served 70 million passengers in its first year and a successful retrofit pilot project for diesel buses.
Today, CTS-Mexico and EMBARQ have expanded their activities into other Mexican cities, namely Queretaro.
