Reclaimed wood

WRI's offices use salvaged and "character-grade" subpremium wood -- making use of a beautiful and increasingly rare material that would otherwise be destined for the landfill.

In turn-of -the-century Virginia, the abundant local heart pine was rapidly depleted to meet a growing need for construction lumber. Today, the Virginia Pine is near extinction, and most remaining stands are second- or third-growth forests. However, because of the durability of heart pine as a building material, many of those original structures still stand today. As older structures are replaced with modern facilities, salvage companies have begun to carefully disassemble old factories, houses, and stores to recover the pine. Lumber is then re-milled and used to create hardwood floors, railings, and, in WRI's case, the beautiful and unique doors to our main conference room created by E.T. Moore manufacturing.
