Guidelines for translocations of living organisms
- Introduction of a alien species should be considered only if clear and well-dfined benefits to man or natural communiteis can be expected.
- Introduction of an alien species should be considered only if no native species seems suitable for the same purpose.
- No alien species should be deliberately introduced into any natural habitat (one not perceptibly altered by man), island, lake, or ocean, whether within or beyond the limits of national jurisdiction.
- Introductions should not be made into semi-natural habitats except for exceptional reasons and only when the operation has been comprehensively investigated and carefully planned in advance.
- Introductions into highly modified habitats should take place only after the effects on surrounding natural and semi-natural habitats are assessed.
