Study shows potential reef trouble spots in Virgin Islands

Virgin Island Daily News reporter Lynn Freehill highlights Reefs at Risk findings findings that focus on key areas in the U.S. Virgin Islands where soil erosion could destroy coral reefs. WRI's Lauretta Burke, manager of the Reefs at Risk project, presented her findings at the ninth annual Department of Natural Resources and Planning's Non-point Source Pollution Conference.

In the report Reefs at Risk in the Caribbean, Ms. Burke finds that nearly two-thirds of the region’s reefs are threatened from direct human pressures. Many reefs are subject to threats such as over-fishing, runoff of pollution and sediments from the land, and the ravages of storms.
