The majority of new electrical capacity around the world in the coming decades will be built in developing countries–the same countries that are at greatest risk from the impacts of climate change. This presents a challenge: promoting the strong economic growth of developing countries while ensuring that the energy that powers it is clean and does not contribute to increased greenhouse gas emissions. Renewable energy enables developing countries to meet this challenge, while also providing numerous other benefits, including reduced vulnerability to volatile global energy prices, greater energy independence, and a competitive stake in a growing global market.
WRI works with partners around the world to identify the right mechanisms for growing renewable energies in developing countries. Our ongoing research and analysis details policies that attract investment, ensure that best practices are applied, promote innovation, and minimize negative impacts on local communities.
