About Jeffrey Wielgus

Jeffrey Wielgus is a Natural Resource Economist in the People and Ecosystems Program. He is currently working on the estimation of economic values of coastal resources in the Caribbean. Jeffrey has a B.Sc. in Marine Science/Biology (University of Miami) and Master degrees in Ecology (Universidad de los Andes, Colombia) and Environmental and Natural Resource Economics (University of Maryland/Universidad de los Andes joint degree). For his Ph.D. research (Bar-Ilan University, Israel), he studied the impact of human activities on the ecology and economics of the coral reef system of the northern Red Sea. Jeffrey conducted postdoctoral research on issues related to marine conservation and economics at Arizona State University, University of Cambridge, and University of British Columbia. He worked in the Colombian Ministry of the Environment as its first Assistant Director for Non-forest Ecosystems (1995), and helped develop legislation to protect the country’s coastal and marine ecosystems.
