About Ashwin

Ashwin is an Associate - Urban Transport at EMBARQ India. He coordinates technical support for bus operations and non-motorized transport projects. He is based in Bangalore where his primary focus is working with the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) to help improve the quality of public bus services in the city. He also contributed to the development of ‘Bus Karo’, a guidebook on bus operations and service planning for Indian cities, and is working to develop peer-to-peer learning networks among urban public transport operators based on this material. He previously interned at EMBARQ India in 2009.

Ashwin has several years of experience working at the intersection of economics and urban issues. Prior to joining EMBARQ he was a member of the research staff at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. During his time there he provided statistical and economic analysis for a number of research projects on public health in urban areas. Ashwin has also been involved in several consultancy projects in the field of urban development. Chief among these include generating a growth strategy for the manufacturing sector in the city of Mbarara, Uganda, developing a feasibility study for retrofitting residential buildings with energy saving technologies in London, UK, and conducting a project assessment for an industrial park designed to promote the green economy in London, UK.

Ashwin has been formally trained as an economist and an urban development planner. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics and Economics from Columbia University, and a Master’s degree (with Distinction) in Urban Economic Development from University College London.
