China's Growing Energy Efficiency Sector

China’s energy efficiency industry is emerging as a high growth sector with the country projected to spend as much as Rmb2.1 trillion (USD300 billion) over the next five years on products and services that cut energy use.

The key drivers of this development are the Chinese government’s determination to curb the country’s expanding energy appetite as well as higher energy and production costs.

Firms that develop cost-effective energy-saving technologies, particularly for the most energy-intensive industries, are poised to capture the opportunities. If successful, these enterprises will not only become profitable, but will also help lead China to a more sustainable energy future.

The new WRI report China’s Booming Energy Efficiency Industry details the drivers of this fast-growing green business and highlights four innovative Chinese small and medium enterprises supported by the New Ventures program that are on the forefront of this positive environmental change:

• Beijing Shenwu Thermal Energy Technology Company develops and sells advanced industrial combustion and heating furnaces that reduce energy consumption by more than 50 percent.
• Zhuhai Huisheng Energy Technology Development Company’s energy management systems reduce energy consumption for commercial buildings by almost half.
• Xi’an Ruichi Metallurgical Equipment Company’s heat recovery technology reduces energy consumption of smelting furnaces while increasing production.
• Beijing Sinen En-tech Company’s micro-filtration and membrane systems allow used steam to be recycled back into industrial boilers, reducing energy and water consumption.
