Webinar: China Strategy and Action on Climate Change

In the final installment of the Climate Change Solutions: Frontline Perspectives from Around the Globe webinar series, Dr. Fuqiang Yang will discuss climate policy from China’s perspective. Dr. Yang is a Senior Adviser at NRDC’s China Program on climate change, energy and environment.

Dr. Yang’s discussion will introduce major achievements and lessons of the Chinese government policy and action on climate change in the previous 11th five year plan (2006-2011), and market-based measures in the current 12th five year plan (2011-2015). It will also illustrate the Chinese government’s policy and attitude towards international negotiation on climate change. It emphasizes that China should play leadership role in climate change issues.

The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

About the Speaker

Fuqiang Yang is a senior adviser at NRDC on climate change, energy and environment and has been involved in energy and environmental issues for more than 3 decades. Dr. Yang was director of Global Climate Solutions, WWF International, from 2008 to 2010, and vice president of Energy Foundation (EF) and chief representative of Energy Foundation Beijing Office from 2000 to 2008. The EF China Sustainable Energy Program (CSEP) was dedicated to public policy development in China aimed at cost-effective carbon emissions reductions through the deployment of energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies. He also worked with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory on China’s energy and environmental issues, and in 1984, worked on regional energy planning at the Cornell University as a fellow of the World Bank. Before he moved to the United States in 1984, Fuqiang Yang worked with Energy Research Institute, State Planning Commission, on renewable and rural energy policy, energy modeling and forecasting, project evaluation and long term planning. Fuqiang Yang has published dozens of papers and reports in those areas. Fuqiang Yang got his Ph. D in Industrial Engineering at West Virginia University in the United States in 1991 and his B. S in Physics at Jilin University in China in 1977.

Hosted and sponsored by the Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy, in partnership with the World Resources Institute and Environmental Defense Fund, the Climate Change Solutions: Frontline Perspectives from Around the Globe webinar series features ten speakers between September 2011 and April 2012. This series highlights the current state of climate change policy actions through speakers who provide unique insight into the latest policy developments in the world’s highest greenhouse gas emitting countries: United States, China, Germany, Russia, India, United Kingdom, Canada, South Korea, Japan, and Brazil.

The series is publicly available online and promoted to both domestic and international academic and policy communities, including governmental officials, think tank analysts, climate change advocates, professors, and students. The webinar format enables those interested in international climate change policy to access and participate in these presentations from anywhere in the world.

The series is free and open to the public.
