This article deals with the development of an index used to assess the trophic status of transitional water bodies. The index takes into consideration different factors in order to classify aquatic ecosystems. These include causes (inorganic nutrients), key biological components (primary producers) and indicators of effects eutrophication (oxygen). The study is of relevance to Southern Europe as the index was tested and validated in a number of water bodies in the region.
