WASHINGTON (January 30, 2018) — President Trump delivered his first State of the Union speech tonight.

Following is a statement by Dr. Andrew Steer, President & CEO, World Resources Institute:

“President Trump’s tone was serious, but his words often missed the mark. Despite the recent record-breaking extreme weather events, the President failed to connect the dots to climate change. At every turn, this administration has steadily undermined environmental protection and prioritized fossil fuels, as it ignores climate change and science itself. From rolling back limits on air pollution to walking away from the Paris Agreement, the administration’s policies are putting people at greater risk.

“There has never been a ‘war on energy’ or on so-called ‘beautiful clean coal.’ Yet, this administration has failed to take advantage of the growing renewable energy markets, and instead focuses on outdated energy sources.

“The administration is also working to undercut auto emissions standards, which have actually helped inspire innovation to make cars less polluting and save drivers money. America’s infrastructure certainly needs more investment, but that must be accompanied with safeguards to protect people and our natural resources.

“Americans are not waiting to act. U.S. states, cities, businesses and communities are pushing ahead to drive innovation, expand clean energy, and open new economic opportunities. The administration should pursue evidence-based solutions to tackle climate change that supports all Americans and makes the economy stronger for the future.”
