Writer/Editor

The World Resources Institute (WRI) seeks outstanding candidates for the position of Editor/Writer in our External Relations department. This person will join a team of science, research and policy communicators.

The successful candidate will have an exceptional ability to communicate complex ideas and technical analysis concisely, clearly and effectively. We seek a editor/writer to edit scientific publications and products (brochures, executive summaries, etc.). We seek a candidate with writing skills to create original materials such as speeches, position papers and proposals. The successful candidate will also possess skills to coach and train staff in clear and concise expository writing skills. Additional necessary traits include good judgment, creativity, self motivation, curiosity and a good sense of humor.

 

Responsibilities

The editor/writer will:

  • review, rewrite, and edit the work of researchers and analysts;
  • work collaboratively with technical and scientific experts from conception of a publication or product to its completion;
  • provide comments to improve drafts;
  • use the appropriate level of editing; clarify text and graphics for thought, continuity, applicability, and readability and adherence to WRI messaging;
  • eliminate jargon and superfluous content;
  • interact frequently with program staff to ensure their work is being faithfully and accurately conveyed;
  • create original works, such as speeches, remarks, proposals and white papers;

Under direction of the Vice President for External Relations, the editor/writer will also provide training, coaching and mentoring for staff colleagues, providing informal and at times formal training sessions in effective writing. The editor/writer will be expected to provide a distinct and coherent voice for all WRI external communications, including conveying consistent messages about the Institute.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications and/or Public Policy. Master’s degree strongly preferred.
  • Ten years of experience in scientific writing and editing. Experience as a journalist is also highly desired, as is participation in a professional writing community.
  • Strong writing skills. Writing samples required: articles, news clippings, stories, blogs and/or samples posted online (with links) preferred.
  • Ability to work flexibly with the collaboration of External Relations team members
  • Help build strong, long-term organizational relationships with peers and colleagues;
  • Strong time management skills, especially when it comes to urgent editing assignments.
  • Involvement in the environmental community, interest in environmental issues, and supporting WRI’s core goals.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and self-motivation
