External Relations: Communications Officer based in Beijing, China

The China Communications Officer is a key member of World Resources Institute’s China Office as well as a member of our Headquarters External Relations staff.  Primary responsibility is to develop and implement WRI China’s communication and advocacy strategy in consultation with the China Country Director. 

 

This position will be a generalist communications position as well as a front-line representative of WRI to local Chinese and international news media in China.  She/he will work to build the profile and credibility of WRI among key media - both traditional (print, television and radio) and on-line.  He/she will also oversee the day-to-day management of the WRI China website.   She/he will work collaboratively with a wide range of individuals throughout the Institute - most closely with the China Country Director but also exchanging information with headquarters External Relations staff.  Constant coordination with key staff in the Programs and External Relations Department is crucial.  Position reports to China Country Director with a dotted line to the VP of External Relations.

 

Responsibilities

 

Ø Writing Responsibilities

  • Write reports and prepare documentation (in Chinese and English);
  • Write and circulate press releases and undertake media advocacy where appropriate;
  • Ensure that the organization’s publications and videos are of high quality and are disseminated appropriately;
  • Prepare annual reports, write external and internal reports and funding proposals.

 

Ø Translation and Interpreting Responsibilities

  • Translating reports, publications from Chinese to English and vice versa as required;
  • Interpreting at meetings and when required;
  • Draft meeting reports as needed.

 

Ø Media Relations and Online Outreach

  • Day-to-day management of the WRI China website, including updating and ongoing monitoring, gaining input from other WRI staff as necessary;
  • Liaise with the media to profile WRI in China;
  • Write and edit materials for distribution to the news media, including press releases, advisories, fact sheets and sound bites;
  • Develop contacts/relationships with key journalists, relevant to the promotion of WRI’s work.

Ø Coordination Function

  • Respond to WRI HQ and China program communication and information requests;
  • To contribute to planning of and arrangements for WRI events, in particular regarding the design and production of materials.

 

Qualifications

 

  • 6-8 years experience in communications field;
  • Experience with media reports and news press writing;
  • Excellent verbal and written skills in English and Mandarin;
  • Bachelor’s degree with Masters preferred;
  • Excellent organizational, coordination, and planning skills;
  • Strong commitment to and understanding of sustainable development; 
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout China and internationally.

    • Excellent written and oral communications skills in English and Mandarin;
    • The ability to work in a highly collaborative work environment.
    • Background in website content creation, editing and management.
