WRI’s Climate and Energy Program seeks an Associate to manage its newly established “China Climate and Energy Information Network.” The Associate will work with a group of specialists engaged in Chinese energy and climate programs and activities to provide data, analysis, and expert opinions on Chinese climate and energy actions. The goal of the project will be to track and communicate progress and pitfalls of China’s actions to U.S. opinion leaders, federal agencies, and Congress. In addition, the Network will develop comparative data, information, and analysis on the two countries to support mutual understanding on common actions, and relative experiences with policy development and implementation.
Responsibilities
Key Activities The Associate will be responsible for successfully managing the below activity areas:
Expansion and stewardship of an internationally renowned experts network
- Quarterly convening of core network members around new research releases, policy developments in China, and new data emerging in China
- Structured engagement and sharing of ongoing research and findings
- Provision of common datasets and tools that can be accessed by network members
- Development and review of data, tools, and images
Synthesis, writing and management of web-based material on cutting edge research efforts and programs around China’s climate and energy activities.
- Coordination of timely submissions and contributions by network experts
- Review and revision of submissions from contributors
- Tailored fact sheets and summaries of expert submissions
Supervise and engage in design of state-of-the-art datasets and visuals
- Data collection, review, and analysis from institutions in China and around the world
- Communication of critical data and statistics – including development of visual tools and images
- Catalogued media stories, data, and congressional questions to swiftly identify and respond to key concerns and issues as they arise in the public space and in Congressional offices on China’s energy and climate actions
- Outreach materials and messages
Outreach to Members of Congress and other Constituencies on China’s challenges and efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy use.
- Key network members and constituencies identified and an “issue map” of their concerns on China’s energy and climate policy, action, and progress
- Briefings designed to leverage network expertise – one-on-one meetings with Members and their staff from network members
- Events participation and co-design with other Institutions and groups
- Supporting and communicating U.S.-China partnerships on climate and energy
- Share lessons, case studies, data from the network with constituencies such as states, cities, business, and labor
Project Management The successful candidate will have at least two years of demonstrated project management experience. S/he will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and reporting on project budgets and will be expected to regularly report on the project’s progress and outcomes to the Director of Legislative Affairs and the Program Director as well as key donors. The Associate will be expected to solve problems independently and manage other staff working on the same project.
Fundraising and Donor Stewardship The Associate will be expected to build and maintain relationships with current and prospective donors. Responsibilities will include submitting timely financial and narrative reporting to funders and drafting funding proposals for private foundations, US government agencies, and bilateral donors.
Qualifications
The Associate must have the following key competencies:
• At least 5 years of relevant professional experience, including significant project management experience and detailed knowledge of climate and energy issues in relation to the U.S. and China.
• Advanced degree in relevant field.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively coordinate a network of contributing experts and ensure timely delivery of analysis, opinion, and Q&A pieces.
• Strong organizational skills and proven initiative and leadership.
• Excellent English writing and oral communication skills, and familiarity with Chinese language and culture.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and World Wide Web, and capacity to turn raw data and statistical information into clear and visually compelling images and tools.
The Associate will be a motivated self-starter with strong coordination and project management skills; capable of working independently; as well as have good interpersonal skills. S/he will work collaboratively with other WRI and external staff as circumstances require.
