EMBARQ: Associate

EMBARQ - The World Resources Institute’s (WRI) Center for Sustainable Transport - is seeking an Associate to work in transport, environment and urban development projects across the EMBARQ network. Established in May 2002, EMBARQ acts as a catalyst for socially, financially, and environmentally sound solutions to the problems of urban transport. EMBARQ focuses on cities in developing countries where air pollution, traffic congestion, and lack of access to clean and convenient transport are most acute and the poor bear the brunt of the problem. EMBARQ’s strategy is to foster viable government-business-civil society partnerships whose members are committed to finding solutions to the transportation-related problems facing the cities in which they operate. Responsibilities

EMBARQ is seeking a highly motivated and self-driven professional who will play a key technical role in planning and implementing transport, environment, and urban transport projects across the EMBARQ network. Major responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing technical expertise in urban transportation, city and regional planning, and/or environmental engineering/management/science for the development of sustainable transportation/land use projects. Projects include the development or improvement of transit systems, non-motorized transport initiatives, traffic demand management, transit oriented urban development, clean fuels/clean vehicles, and policy reform initiatives.
  • Providing special attention to the transport, land use and environment connections for the improvement of urban quality, use of efficient modes of transport, and long term sustainability of cities, as well as the reduction of green house gas emissions.
  • Identifying and leading relevant research by EMBARQ/WRI on emerging trends and best practices in urban transportation, city planning and environmental sustainability.
  • Identifying and building partnerships with organizations or firms in the urban transportation, city planning, and environment fields for the development of sustainable, low carbon transport and urban development projects.
  • Overseeing EMBARQ’s efforts to promote sustainable transportation models through outreach and education. Producing materials and managing contributions from partner organizations for workshops, conferences, and large publications.
  • Working on related issues and tasks according to the requirements of the program. Activities will be defined on a project-by-project basis across the EMBARQ network. The work involves international travel and working with diverse disciplines and people.

Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in transport planning or engineering, city and regional planning, urbanism or environmental engineering, management or science.

  • At least 2 years of relevant professional experience. Demonstrated transport planning, city and regional planning, urbanism, or environmental science research experience.

  • Proven ability to manage projects, fundraise and work in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams.

  • Self-motivation and enthusiasm to work in developing countries and on sustainability issues.

  • Possesses excellent English. Knowledge of Spanish, Portuguese, or other major language is a plus.

  • Advanced knowledge of standard software applications and familiarity with urban transport and city planning tools. Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a plus.

  • Availability and willingness to travel.
