Institutions & Governance: Senior Associate, Electricity Governance Initiative

The World Resources Institute’s (WRI) Institutions and Governance Program is seeking a Senior Associate to lead the Electricity Governance Initiative (EGI). EGI works with civil society, governments and the private sector to promote more inclusive, transparent, and accountable systems of governance of the electricity sector. EGI partners combine research, analytical and advocacy strategies to empower people and strengthen institutions to deliver environmentally and socially sustainable energy. EGI is a joint effort of WRI and Prayas Energy Group (India), and is active in India, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Brazil and South Africa. Responsibilities

The Associate will lead EGI’s diverse network of civil society organizations to develop new strategies to improve governance of the electricity sector in order to promote environmental and social sustainability. Near term challenges will include demonstrating the relevance of the initiative to integrating climate change considerations into decision-making in the power sector in the context of global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  Specific responsibilities will include:

  • Authoring and publishing new research on governance of electricity, and in particular on governance processes that support energy efficiency, renewable energy, and social equity
  • Sustaining strategic partnerships with NGOs and research institutes, particularly in developing countries to achieve EGI objectives
  • Fundraising for this ambitious global program with an annual budget of $600,000
  • Representing the project at high level external fora as well as internally within WRI
  • Collaborating with staff in the Climate and Energy Program, and within the Institutions and Governance Program, particularly on climate policy in developing countries, and international finance for energy and infrastructure
  • Project planning, management and reporting

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree and at least 2 years of work experience in social and development issues required
  • Strong understanding of energy, environment and development issues
  • Demonstrated skills in leadership, strategy and project management
  • Expertise in governance, and a commitment to transparent, inclusive and accountable decision-making processes
  • Understanding of policies and regulatory processes that support renewable energy, energy efficiency, and clean technology deployment, particularly in developing countries
  • Commitment to good understanding of the Electricity Governance Indicator toolkit
  • Excellent research, written and oral communication skills
  • Track record working internationally, preferably in one of the EGI countries
  • Fluency in English required, strong proficiency in another relevant language (Portuguese, Thai, Bahasa or Russian preferred)
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, Explorer).

Salary & Benefits

Note: this position may be filled at either the “Senior Associate” level or “Associate Level” depending on the candidate’s background and prior experience. Hiring Salary Range: $55,000 – $80,000 depending on experience, plus comprehensive benefits package
