Climate & Energy: Carbon, Capture, & Storage (CCS) Associate

The World Resources Institute has an opening for an Associate in its Climate & Energy Program (CEP) to work on international technology deployment, with a focus on carbon capture and storage (CCS). The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent analytical, project management, and communication skills as well as a deep understanding of the technical and political requirements for carbon capture and storage deployment. The candidate will work to design, plan, and execute research and policy analysis. S/he will work with a WRI team dedicated to finding practical solutions to overcome the barriers to CCS demonstration and deployment in the U.S. and China. This will be a full-time position subject to a six-month probationary period.

Responsibilities

Project Management

The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing research projects, reporting on progress and outcomes, and convening stakeholder groups. The Associate will be expected to solve problems independently and manage other staff working on the same project. S/he will develop and maintain project budgets and report on them.

Research and Analysis

The Associate is expected to regularly produce original, high quality research and analysis on carbon capture and storage technologies. The Associate will work on multiple research tasks collaboratively with other WRI staff and research partners. S/he will also be expected to participate in WRI’s peer-review process.

Outreach and Communications

The Associate will be expected to give presentations at conferences, workshops, and other events related to carbon capture and storage, domestically and internationally. In addition, s/he will be responsible for organizing events (within WRI and at outside conferences) aimed at delivering our findings and messages to our target audiences. Outreach and communications may also include conducting media interviews, as well as liaising with Board members, government officials, and others in the environmental community.

Fundraising

The Associate will be expected to build and maintain relationships with donors and prospective donors. Responsibilities will include drafting funding proposals for private foundations, US government agencies, and bilateral donors, as well as grants management and reporting to funders.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in economics, geology, public policy, environmental studies, engineering, or a related field, as well as five years of relevant professional experience.
  • A sound understanding of and professional experience in the technical, economic, and social issues surrounding carbon capture and storage technology deployment as well as knowledge of energy issues and public policy options for supporting CCS and other low-carbon technology demonstration and deployment in the US and China.
  • Experience and knowledge specific to China’s energy and policy issues is beneficial.
  • Excellent qualitative research skills as well as strong quantitative skills, including the ability to conduct analyses independently.
  • Strong organizational skills, excellent English-language written and oral communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to work effectively in teams and to assert initiative and leadership when appropriate.
