Markets & Enterprise: Director, Capital Markets Research

The World Resources Institute (WRI) is seeking a Director to lead its Envest Initiative. This initiative is based in WRI’s Markets & Enterprise Program which focuses on the intersection between environmental sustainability and the private sector. The program provides cutting-edge research and related activities for investors and companies to integrate sustainability into their decisions and therefore help solve the earth’s most pressing environmental problems.

Envest is a 5-year initiative to promote environmentally sustainable business and investment decisions. The Director plays a key role in the Markets & Enterprise Program and leads a team and a body of work that focuses on the practices of large investors, financial analysts and corporations. The work builds on WRI’s strong 10-year track record in this area, and WRI’s intention is to grow this work over time. We aim to make a significant contribution to how investors and corporations perceive environmental trends and adjust their strategies accordingly.

The Envest Director will develop the research and influence strategy and implement a portfolio of projects. S/he will execute and refine Envest’s strategic plan that sets priorities and guides the Program’s initiatives which include: integration of environmental risks and opportunities into equity analysis, capital formation for clean technologies, and greening corporate supply chains.

The Envest Director will guide and lead a team of associates and analysts. Envest works in partnership with a number of financial institutions, and the Director helps to develop and manage these relationships. S/he will also play a leading role in communicating the results of the work, including presentations, media relations, and increasing the visibility of the Markets & Enterprise Program. Lastly, the Director has overall responsibility for fundraising, which involves securing grants from foundations, corporations, and other sources.

This position reports to the Director of the Markets & Enterprise Program.

Responsibilities

  • Refine and maintain a compelling and coherent vision and strategy for the Envest initiative that contributes to WRI’s mission and goals

  • Guide the design and implementation of practical, applied research that can be used by investors and corporations to help tackle major environmental problems.

  • Work closely with associates and analysts to produce analyses of relevant environmental and financial issues, including quantitative analyses and assessments of environmental trends and their impact on investment opportunities.

  • Play a leading role in setting WRI’s strategic direction in this area.

  • Communicate the results of our work widely and authoritatively based on a strategy that will yield the broadest and most effective uptake of our findings.

  • Raise funds for the work, including development of successful grant proposals for various types of funders, such as foundations, corporations, governments, and individuals.

  • Manage budgets and handle project administration.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in environmental issues and commitment to WRI’s mission.

  • 10 years or more of work experience that must include experience in financial analysis (including equity valuation and credit assessment) and/or investment management.

  • Active network of contacts in the investment community and the private sector in general.

  • Results focused, with a strong team orientation, and the ability to work well under pressure toward a tight deadline.

  • Demonstrated experience managing and producing research. Must be able to develop and guide market and financial analyses.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and compellingly to a wide range of audiences both verbally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to write in an organized, clear, and articulate manner.

  • Proven track record in business development and/or fundraising.

  • Graduate degree in business, finance, or economics preferred. Other academic disciplines may be suitable contingent upon strong work experience in the private sector. Additional studies related to the environment are an advantage.

Salary & Benefits

WRI offers a compensation package that includes salary, pension plan contribution, and potential bonuses. Hiring range $90K - $107K - commensurate with experience.
