People & Ecosystems: Senior Associate -Sustainable Forest Procurement

The People & Ecosystems Program at the World Resources Institute (WRI) is seeking a results-oriented Senior Associate to help develop, lead, and grow new WRI forest-related projects in China. The Senior Associate will begin by collaborating with a team to research and publish a corporate guide about legality requirements and compliance in the global forest product supply chain. The Senior Associate will also play a key role developing and implementing new WRI projects related to sustainable forest management and forest product supply chains.

Responsibilities

  •  Research and write a corporate guide on legality issues in global forest product supply chains (e.g., policies such as U.S. Lacey Act, EU FLEG-T, and national procurement requirements; compliance issues; approaches, tools, and resources for compliance), building upon and integrating existing WRI research and efforts of other stakeholders.
  •  Organize and lead events to raise awareness and build capacity of stakeholders (companies, civil society organizations, government officials) about legality requirements (e.g., procurement policies, Lacey Act, EU FLEG-T), their implications, and how to comply.
  • Give public presentations on issues related to legality and forest product supply chains.
  • Help develop, fundraise for, and implement new WRI projects related to sustainable forest management and forest product supply chains in China.
  • Coordinate and ensure adequate interaction and synergies with WRI staff at headquarters.
  • Serve as internal reviewer for WRI colleagues’ publications/products (to support the institute’s peer review process, which is a key part of achieving excellence in all WRI’s work).

Qualifications

  • Masters degree or equivalent in natural resources, environmental management, forestry, or a related field.
  • Five or more years of relevant professional experience in international forestry issues such as forest product trade, forest product procurement policies and practices, forest product supply chain management, and/or forest trade legality and enforcement.
  • Demonstrated superb analytical and strategic thinking skills.
  • Fluency in oral and written Chinese and English. Good public speaking skills a plus.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Successful track record working with stakeholder processes and demonstrated ability to assert initiative and leadership. Experience with the private sector is a plus.
  • International work experience and good cross-cultural and inter-personal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to secure funding from donors and experience with project development and proposal writing are a plus.
  • A strong, proven ability to deliver real-world results.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office and internet research.
  • Willingness to travel throughout China and internationally.
