Greenhouse Gas Protocol Intern
The Greenhouse Gas Protocol at the World Resources Institute seeks a results-oriented college graduate for a full-time 6-month internship. The intern will provide research support for the GHGP’s tools for calculating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which are used by hundreds of companies worldwide to develop their carbon footprints. The GHG Protocol (www.ghgprotocol.org) is the most widely used international accounting framework for government and business leaders to understand, quantify, and manage greenhouse gas emissions. It is a decade-long partnership between the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, and it works with businesses, governments, and environmental groups worldwide to build a new generation of credible and effective programs for tackling climate change.
The position will involve a significant amount of interaction with public officials to identify and incorporate state-of-the-art calculation methodologies into the GHG calculation tools. His/her work offers exciting synergies with ongoing programs within the GHG Protocol, especially the development of new standards for life-cycle/product-level accounting and the GHG Protocol’s work in developing countries.
Responsibilities
• Conduct research and write summaries on methodologies for calculating GHG emissions
• Build and maintain database of methodologies
• Interview/liaise with public agencies
• Upgrade the Excel-based calculation tools
• Assist with the technical review and adoption of new sector-specific Protocols for GHG accounting and calculation
Qualifications
• Undergraduate degree in environmental science or other relevant discipline
• Demonstrated research skills
• Excellent academic performance
• Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written English
• Highly motivated self-starter with strong organizational and interpersonal skills
• Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office and internet research
Desired Qualifications
• Familiarity or work experience with climate change, especially the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and IPCC
• Familiarity or work experience with transportation and building sector emissions
• Experience in contact management (Raiser’s Edge) and developing Excel applications
• Strong knowledge of desktop publishing and graphics software (Adobe InDesign and Photoshop)
Salary is commensurate with experience.
