Access Initiative Research Intern

We are looking for two highly motivated and independent person to play a significant role in research and communication for the Access Initiative (http://www.accessinitiative.org/), a global network that promotes access to information, participation, and justice in environmental decision-making.

Responsibilities

Interns will work on several of the following activities, to be allocated based on interest, skills, and team priorities:

  • Access to justice research: Building and analyzing a database on several dozen court cases in a variety of countries for access to justice in environmental affairs.
  • Access and poverty: Contribute research to network-wide discussion on mechanisms to ensure access to information, public participation, and access to justice for people living in poverty.
  • Case study research: Contribute to background research on ongoing video projects featuring landmark cases in access to environmental decision-making.
  • Editing of expert articles: Review, analysis, and online publication of informative memorandums by experts in environment and democracy.
  • Blog posting: Write and edit brief summaries of related news, publications, and data for posting on the Access Initiative homepage and online Communities of Practice.

Qualifications

 Applicants should be in pursuit of a Master’s degree, law degree, or a recent graduate. Successful applicants will have a demonstrated interest in international environmental issues, developing countries, and an understanding of the role that legal and political systems play in governing environment and natural resources. Qualifications include:

  • Superior care and concern for detail.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Strong quantitative abilities and experience in interpreting data.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel data tools. Ability to manipulate large data sets.
  • Knowledge of international geography and environmental issues.

Salary & Benefits:

Unpaid part time internship, 15-20 hours per week.

Employment Period:
September – December 2008 with possibility of extension.
